Three reflections on identity, belonging, and female resistance

Si no, el invierno (If Not, Winter) brings together the works of Ana Nance, María Gimeno, and Gözde Ju — three artists who explore identity, belonging, and the place of the female body in a world in transformation. From diverse geographies, their practices interweave ceramics, textiles, photography, and drawing to question inherited narratives and construct new spaces of existence. Through different materials and gestures, they shape a shared landscape: memory as a living fabric, home as a contested territory, and the female body as a map.

María Gimeno repairs invisible genealogies and denounces structural violence against women; Ana Nance delves into her cultural and emotional roots through the symbolic materiality of the image; Gözde Ju reconstructs feminine and collective memories through fabrics, found objects, and gestures of care.

The exhibition thus establishes a dialogue with the fragmentary nature of the female voice. The works of these artists function like Sappho’s fragments: small affirmations, remnants that resist and reassemble themselves.

In that intersection — between what is missing and what endures — the exhibition proposes an emotional cartography: pieces that act as recovered verses, gestures that persist in naming. Because, as Nance, Gimeno, and Ju show, identity and belonging are at once inheritance and acts of resistance.

*“If Not, Winter” is the title of the translation by Anne Carson, the acclaimed Canadian poet and Nobel Prize nominee, of the surviving fragments of Sappho.
